happy twenty-oh-nine / curl up and go to sleep

I won't be writing here for the next long while. Call it a hiatus for a few things.

I used to write about stuff, a long time ago before it turned into 'what i'm reading this morning from digg.com'. so hopefully one day in the future i'll be writing again, perhaps even with capital letters this time.

in the meantime i'm on flickr.com and on facebook.com; they get updated slightly more than i use to update here.

till then.

that was a bit of a break, but now that the organizational demanding part of the holidays is over i feel like i can cruise into the new year and pop back into work january 5th all fresh and relaxed (well ok, we'll see.)

over the last while i finished reading:

shadowfall by james clemens - which was fun to read, pretty light but a really weird take on gods as physical beings in a fantasy novel. in it, the body fluids of the gods power the world's magic - and yes, it's as strange as it sounds.

and

ender's game by orson scott card - a good book and i enjoyed it. i might pick up more books in this series, but i'm in no rush. although i find it tough to like card's personal views, he didn't make an issue of it at least in the book i read.

also we managed to see:

kung-fu panda - really liked it, especially the dream sequence at the beginning.
dark knight - enjoyed it, though heath did a fantastic joker but two face post-transformation didn't go very far and didn't even look that good.
tale of despareaux - great textures, both mouse and rattowns were great but it was missing something that kept it from being an animation classic. i did really like the quest sequence though, it looked fantastic.
forgetting sarah marshall - i didn't expect to like this, but i did. it's funny and not overly in a stupid-adolescent way like most romantic comedies.

i hear about alchemy recently for flash which is better explained in this article. but in short, is a way to convert c programming language code to flash, in a way that maintains a good amount of speed. a good example of this is doom in flash which is basically a port to flash of the open doom source using alchemy. it's pretty impressive, and even if i'm still trying to go for pure as 3.0 code it's nice to have options for optimization.

and although it's short, i dug strong bad's dangeresque. it's a one-room adventure game and it brings back memories. also it reminds me to get sam and max season two and strong bad's cool game yadda yadda.

i'm also engaged now :) - aka she said yes.

so hope it was happy christmas and an awesome new year!

snowfall '08

the city woke up under a nice comfy 3 inch blanket of snow this morning. as did our deck, although it was then rudely disturbed by a very happy puli hopping around and loving the white stuff.

it's also my week off, which has been pretty good except for the not-really-off/work i put in monday, tuesday and wednesday from home for a project due this week. i'm alright with it though seeing as it's AS 3 practice; something i've been trying to get off my task-list for months now; and i don't have to listen to other people getting paged every five minutes over the PA when i'm working at home. now that it's done i think i'll spend the rest of the week going through more of essential actionscript 3 to get ready for the next few projects. possibly picking up CS4 to that end as well, i'm eager to check out some of it's 3d stuff although i'm leaning towards going all papervision.

haven't seen either of the two new bonds, but i am excited for the next star trek, i think j. j. going to do a great job on it (i liked mi 3!) and i can't remember the last time i was excited for a star trek movie.

i've put up some more flickr photos, and actually tagged a few this time. might take some today before everything melts too.

neeeeeeeeerd

i just saw for tax reason's im in ur manger killing ur savior, it's from last year but i think it's great and i really like their style - although, the nerd-factor is off the scale (which makes me love it more). the two guys behind for tax reasons are ben levin and matt burnett (each come with their own blog and kung-fu grip) and their other stuff is really good too, especially their G.O.P. P.S.A. and G.O.P. P.S.A. 2 which they've done up just in time for the us election.

eve online is the game i talk about most and not play. i just love that's it's a space game with a highly evolved economy with user organized corporations where players can engage in fleet warefare, and mercenaries escorting other miners against pirates - all players in unscripted scenarios. maybe one day i'll actually sign up to play, but i'm also hoping that other mmos learn as much as they can from eve. star wars: the old republic, i'm looking at you.

ok, as oleg says, enough of being a neeeeeeeerd.
